Jerry sienfeld has a good bit on helmets...
"There are many things you can point to as proof that the human is not smart. But my personal favorite would have to be that we needed to invent
the helmet. What was happening, apparently, was that we were involved in a lot of activities that were cracking our heads. We chose not to avoid doing
those activities but, instead, to come up with some sort of device to help us continue our head-cracking lifestyles. And even that didn't work
because not enough people were wearing them so we had to come up with the helmet law. Which is even stupider, the idea behind the helmet law being to
preserve a brain whose judgment is so poor, it does not even try to avoid the cracking of the head it's in."
Some things take more than a lifetime.

Hahaha! PIS loves that Seinfeld character.
Yah, owning a helmet is totally not cool! Let's not even take into consideration the fact that one is 18+ and still have to ride a bike.
It's definately sad how low people are willing to go, just to look cool, keep their hair perfect and what not.....

maybe i'm alone here but i didn't find that quotation funny at all. i thought it was stupid. i hate it when comedians wrongly accuse
people of being stupid (they're the stupid ones - don't know all the facts) as a joke and get a laugh out of it. that's the shit
kind of comedy in my opinion.

some comedians are pretty retarded...but for the most part, especially popular ones, they actually research topics they are going to talk about in
their comedy skits. they don't go out there just talking about stuff when they don't have all the facts. 9 times outa 10 they know more
about that topic than anyone in the audiance who would complain about them saying stuff like "they don't know what they're talking
about"
don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to attack you in any way. I personally don't care much for seinfeld, but sometimes he says things
that I do find humorous.
in this case, the way I understand it anyway, he makes a point that I do find comical. saying that if people do things that can potentially injure
themselves (which in itself is kind of a dumb thing to do) and they don't want to stop doing them so they find ways to protect themselves (ie,
the helmet). now other people (lawmakers) decide that since not everyone is using a helmet to protect themselves they decide to pass a law with the
intent to help people. but here he says that this law is created to protect people who are too dumb to protect themselves so why try. if they're
too dumb to try to take precautions especially with something as simple as putting on a helmet, why do we want to protect those people. if
they're too dumb to look after themselves then surely they can't be responsable enough to do any other kind of good.
its not too funny when you have to break it down like that...personally I don't see where he "doesn't have his facts" and I
would agree that if a person doesn't put on a helmet when doing potentially dangerous things, things that could "crack their head",
then they are stupid. self preservation is a natural instinct and reaction of any human being. if someone chooses to ignore that then they must be
stupid. it couldn't be that their naive or ignorant because its a natural function of a human to want to stay safe...anyway, after all that
babble, basicly I just don't get your point of view

I think Seinfeld is more of a "you have to witness/hear it" comedian to find his jokes funny. His comedy is well thought out and possibly
scripted fully. Most of the time, the information and facts he gives out are what makes the joke. Where as some comedians have quick punch lines, that
are obvious and witty.
It's the genious thought that is funny, when you listen to Seinfeld jokes.

what i said wasn't directly in response to this sienfeld guy. the quotation reminded me of some other "comedy" i disagreed with.
in the helmet thing, it's "proves our stupidity that we needed to invent the helmet" and "instead of choosing to avoid the
head-cracking activites" part. it's just dense to say the invention of the helmet is proof humans are stupid. they clearly save a lot of
broken skulls whether we are forced to wear them or not - think of the necessary tasks which are dangerous by nature (construction for example).
i'm sure the vast majority of motorcyclists would wear their helmet regardless of the laws. now i realise he's talking about things like
cycling and skating but as far as i'm aware no one has to wear a helmet when doing that stuff by law. he thinks people should avoid these
potentially dangerous sports? i think we all know that will never happen. the helmet was a perfectly sensible invention which allows people to
continue doing the things they enjoy with less risk of hurting themselves.
people are aware of the risks. maybe it's wishful thinking, but i'd say most people who don't wear a helmet when doing potentially
dangerous things like skating aren't being vain, rash or simply ignorant of the danger, but instead just confident that they'll be careful
enough to avoid wiping out (and, perhaps unwisely, in light of the subject of this thread, putting trust in people not to create dangerous situations
for them). if you call that stupid, fair enough, but of course it depends on the situation.
the "comedy" i was reminded of i don't remember clearly enough to describe it any better than this: the guy was saying how thick
aerospace engineers are. he was saying how strong and hard some metal was - i think some alloy of titanium, or maybe just steel. then he explained how
jumbo jets are built from aluminium, relatively frail and weak. so yes, he'd done some research. he went on to describe how badly a plane could
be torn apart in the forces in the air were wrong, or maybe he described a crash. after all this he concluded that these scientists and engineers were
stupid because they should just build the planes out of the stronger metal. now as far as i can remember he got a huge roar of laughter for this as
everyone in the audience agreed that yes, engineers are very silly. what the guy failed to mention is the fact, blaringly obvious i'm sure to
most of you, that there isn't a hope in hell the plane would take off if it was made from steel or titanium, without some kind of monsterous
rocket engine.
yes, it's all meant to be taken light heartedly, but this just made my blood boil. those engineers he was talking about do brilliant things so
that he, his audience and just about everyone else can benefit from (and, fair enough, probably the engineers' companies most of all) and
he's getting laughs out of people when he dismisses their work as stupid, as if he knows better.
i hope you can see how my mind related the helmets "joke" to this.

I don't think comedians try to insult people (like engineers, or helmet makers). In the case of the helmet, he takes a basic concept of
"doing something dangerous", regaurdless of how fun or neccessary it is, and basicly says that if we are doing things that require the use
of helmets, why are we doing them to begin with? And when you look at it so simply there is a bit of...I guess...ironic humor there. The same goes for
the engineers. When you think about the simple fact that aluminum is much weaker than steel, why not create transportation made of stronger alloys?
Granted, we know that it would be to heavy to fly, but thats not the point he's making.
I think it all just comes down to personal taste. There are some comdeidans and routines that I think are absolutely retarded and others I find
hillarious. Some one else may find those very skits to be just the oposite of my opinion.

i love seinfeld. i actually just got the 4th season on dvd, though i havent watched any episodes yet. anyway, i think Jerry is a brilliantly humorus
guy. i guess i liked the helmet joke so much, because i relate to it. i find it funny that instead of just avoiding the head-cracking activities, we
invented the helmet to continue them. granted, you have to take it in a lighthearted manner, because after further inspection, as Bart showed us, we
do use helmets for contructive things such as constrution work (<- funny how that worked out). i think when we are laughing at this joke, we are
laughing at ourselves, cause jsut about everyone has put on a helemt and partaken in a "head cracking activity" wich if you really think
about it, though fun and exillerating, may not have been all that smart when you consider the possible injuries that you could have sustained from
these activities just so you could have fun.
anyway i think a lot of people dont wear helmets because the think they look lame. i think that is just retarded. i always wear my helmet on a bike,
because frankly i dont give a shit how i look, as long as i know that if i were to get in a major accident, it could save my life. as far as what bart
was saying about being confident in their ability to stay safe, i feel 100% confident that i am a good enough rider not to seriously hurt myself on my
bike, but i have no faith in those around me, esspecially people in cars. as Ivan's story has remided us all, lots of dumb people just dont pay
attention, or are just plain dangerous because they are drunk, or they feel that they have the right of way to bikes no matter what. so i trust me,
but it's me against the world, and in that case, there's a good chance that the world will get the better of me some day. i am just making
sure that im prepaired if that day comes.
Some things take more than a lifetime.
