Say wha'?

There are a lot of highly intelligent folks on this site, no doubt about it.
Can they spell? Sure they can!
Can they use proper grammar? Of course!

So...what is this thread all about?
Good question m'dear. It is now time to...explain.
*crowd ooh's and ahh's*

This is a chance for ALL of us to expand our knowledge of the English language. How, you may ask? (Oh how I love your questions! *pinches cheeks*)

Drumroll please?..
It's the "vocabulary" thread!...this one! * nods & grins*

Everyday, users will come here and enlighten us with one word they find particularly exciting, and that is preferably of not-so-simple spelling.

All that is asked is that you post;

  1. The word
  2. Its definition
  3. Use it in a sentence,si vous plait.

[a pronunciation key is always a bonus, by the way]

This will hopefully help all of us in an intellectual level, and plus...isn't it just great to learn something new everyday? I thought so.

Let us begin, my choice of word for the day will be shortly posted. So many words to choose from! -squeals like a little school girl-

Dez

The night's as hot as hell. It's a lousy room in a lousy part of a lousy town - I'm staring at a goddess. She's telling me she wants me. I'm not going to waste one more minute wondering how I've gotten this lucky. She smells like angels ought to smell, the perfect woman... the Goddess. Goldie. She says her name is Goldie.

How do you communicate those emotions that are so intense that no physical expression or series of words can even scratch the surface?

one of my favorite words: antidisestablishmentarianism
an•ti•dis•es•tab•lish•men•tar•i•an•ism
Pronunciation: (an"tE-dis"u-stab"lish-mun-târ'E-u-niz"um, an"tI-) —n.
meaning: opposition to the withdrawal of state support or recognition from an established church, esp. the Anglican Church in 19th-century England.

i wont bother to put it in a sentance

These have been weak efforts so far. Dez wants words most of us have never heard before. Although the Simpsons quotation did crack me up. Anyway:

Boondoggle
noun An unnecessary or wasteful project or activity.
That project on testing the malleability of CD jewel cases is a boondoggle if I ever saw one.

verb To waste time or money on a boondoggle
Kindypot spends most of his time boondoggling.
