New MP3 Website

I'm starting my own business soon. Creating an mp3 hosting site. Which will have tons of features including

- Unlimited mp3 uploads by a band
- Online radio station that will include every artist that signs up
- Online store for independent and unsigned bands

I'm also going to accept checks and money orders.

There's a free membership but I plan on offering a gold membership for $6 a month/$20 a year. $50 or so less then some of the other site's. Not some joke and hopefully won't turn out to be some small website. I'm not working for some company that's trying to find a way to make some money. It's a low-budget project at the moment. Only have enough money to run the website and advertise. I'll hopefully have it up soon. I'm wondering what features everyone would like to see.

i had this idea once apon a time, its a great idea but its very hard to make it work. first of all, its going to cost a great deal more than you seem to expect. 6 bucks a month would probably cover things ok if u had enough ppl using it, but chances are most will take full advantage of free. 20 bucks is way to cheap for a full year subscription. 6 bucks a month for 12 months is 72 dollars so you're losing out on 52 bucks per band. although offering a discount price for a year's subscription is a good idea, i would suggest something along the lines of maybe 50 bucks for a year...maybe less. at the very least you should start higher until you get popular enough to have enough ppl paying that u can drop that price.

most importantly, hosting space and bandwidth are going to cost a freakin fortune. plus you need someone to set up that radio station and possably needed to work on it full time. i'm not entirely sure how that process would work (ie, adding new songs to the playlist(s) as bands upload them and what not).

i'm not real sure on legality issues, but i think if u are going to offer an online store you might need to stock the merchandise. otherwise allow the bands to sell their cds from their own websites as they already are. just have a link to it or something. and if there will be any kind of selling of goods or services i'm pretty sure you will need a business license and what not.

i'm not sure how well or how much you know about creating websites and things of the sort, but if u aren't knowledgable you will either hope to be lucky enough to find someone to do it for free, or start investing in an employee.

It's going to cost a fortune sooner or later. I hope to make enough to keep it up and running. As far the cost goes, it shouldn't be a problem if there's people signing up.

My main reason for offering a $20 plan is to hopefully get the attention of people. I might raise it up to $30. Make it affordable enough to anyone. I'm hoping more people would take advantage of how cheap it is other than signing up with a free membership. I'm also allowing money orders and checks so if anyone under 18 wants to sign up they can without going after their parent's credit card. If say 2,000 users pay $20 for the full membership, I'd make $40,000 right there.

The radio station won't be anything great. Just a radio station out of flash. Not allowing you to see the complete playlist though but allowing you to skip through songs. Maybe with a few short advertisements as well. Only add 500 or so songs to the playlist for the day or so. It should be enough for a day. Then I'd change the playlist the next day. Wouldn't take a lot of work as long as I don't lose any codes.

The online store though would just consist of a direct link or so to their site. Make a page for each cd though containg the artwork, tracklisting, and etc... It would only be a portal or so to see what's being released and having an easiar way of getting to the location to buy the cd.

I know enough about hosting a website. If it gets up and running I'll most likely work on it eight hours a day with a few people helping out as well.

If it doesn't work out than oh well. I'm positive it will though. The company that owned MP3.com cashed out and gave some shit saying they weren't making enough of it. I'm sure they were making enough.

A great idea for the radio is to actually have advertisements from various companies. That'll put LOTS of extra cash into your pocket.

one last show.
